From our background producing a multitude of environmental / annual reports Duo Design were asked to design and present the findings of a large body of environmental research.
The central publication, Ka Māpuna: Towards a rangatiratanga framework for the governance of waterways examines the roles of decision makers, stakeholders and landowners throughout New Zealand through a series of Case Studies, along with qualitive and quantitive information and research.
We worked closely with the researchers directly to design and publish the findings in a way that was engaging and easily understood. Our cover design for Ka Māpuna features an image of karu atua. This image was chosen for its special meaning: karu atua are affixed to waka when waka are used in ceremonial occasions. They represent the eyes through which the way ahead is viewed. This resonated deeply with both the researchers and the designers.
The publication research and design and production was generously funded by the Law Foundation NZ, University of Waikato, response.org, Ngā Pae o Te Maramatanga and Te Kaunihere Māori o Aotearoa.
